Introduction

Fractures bones and joints

  • It is breaking or discontinuity of bone.
  • May be due to trauma.
  • May be due to stress on particular bone called stress fracture.

Types

  1. Open fracture: bone comes out of the skin.
  2. Closed fracture: bone is inside the skin
    Symptoms
    • Tenderness
    • Pain
    • Pallor
    • Paralysis

First aid

  • Don’t ask pt to move or rotate the injured part.
  • Use ice pack if available or at home wrap an ice in towel and do compression.
  • Immobilize the affected part by using splints.
  • Elevate the affected part to minimize the swelling.
  • Remove any jewellery, ring for constriction.
  • Give pain killers if present
  • If unconscious check for pulse, breathing if not start CPR.
  • Transfer the pt to hospital.
  • For Open fracture use Doughnut bandage as described in bandage technique.
